Roderick Henderson, PT, ScD, OCS, CSCS has been a strength coach for 22 years and a licensed physical therapist for 15 years. He has devoted his professional life to teaching physical therapists and strength coaches ways to develop evidence-informed and patient-centered exercise programs. 

Mark Powers, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT

Dr. Mark Powers is a physical therapist and educator in Savannah, GA. He is a board certified orthopaedic clinical specialist and a fellow through the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. His clinical speciality is orthopedics with a central focus on educating patients on how strong and resilient the human body is through pain neuroscience education and progressive loading.

Course Description

This course will help develop your movement-coaching skills like no other experience you’ve had. From streamlining your assessment to teaching movements lessons that will stick with your patients long after discharge, Coaching Better Movement will have you seeing exercise in an entirely different light.

Designing and coaching physical activity is essential component of any good rehabilitation or conditioning program. Unfortunately, clinicians and coaches often get lost in all the different assessment and exercise “systems” floating around the internet. Fortunately, there is a much simpler (and better) alternative.

Come ready to learn and to move! You’ll learn how to coach activities ranging from simple floor-based movement awareness lessons designed to restore the patient’s faith in their ability to recover, all the way to more complex loaded movements such as deadlifts and kettlebell swings. After learning and practicing these lessons, you’ll come away feeling much better about your assessment and program design.

8:00 – 9:00am Sleeping Giants: Our problem with exercise prescription during and after rehabilitation
9:00 – 10:30am Movement and the Nervous System: How injury, pain, and disuse affect the way our patients/clients move

10:45 – 12:30 Waking Giants Part I: The science and evidence behind movement assessment
Waking Giants Part II: Adapt movements to the client, then adapt client to loaded movements.
12:30 – 1:30 Lunch
1:30 – 3:30 (LAB) Standing Up: Using the squat as a teaching tool
3:30 – 3:45 Break
3:45 – 5:30 (LAB) Lifting Overhead: Using the press to improve upper body awareness, mobility, and strength

Course Objectives
This 2-day highly interactive course will cut through the nonsense of many exercise assessment and prescription systems. By the end of the course you will be able to:

• Perform reasonable and reliable assessments that identify activities most relevant to our clients’ needs and values
• Design exercise programs that facilitate healing, build self-confidence, and allow the greatest potential for the client to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity
• Coach fundamental movements in a way that allows for both efficient and effective execution of daily functional and athletic activity
• Teach patients that movement is an essential part of life and not to be feared!
